Removing LG DP542H DVD Player Region Lock (Region Free)

Warning: I'm not responsible for any damages or injury, including but not limited to special or consequential damages, that result from your use of this instruction.

Warning 2: This solution will void warranty of your DVD player!

Recently I bought a cheap and nice DVD Player: LG DP542H and to be honest - It didn't cross my mind, that it might still have the region lock. With region lock I was not able to play any DVDs that I've ordered from USA.

637292_0_fSince it's just a piece of hardware and software, there's probably an easy way to turn it off. Well, that's what I thought at least. Unfortunately none of remote button combination would work.

Crazy Hex hack to the rescue

Luckily there's a different solution. It is a bit more complicated, but it should not take longer than 15 minutes:

  1. Create a directory called RMTM0000 which has a subdirectory SCARLET.
  2. Inside of SCARLET (camelcase on purpose) directory create an empty file called KPJC19_1.DVD
  3. Use a hex editor and set the bytes to: 17 17 8C 00
  4. Burn the RMTM0000 directory on a CD-R (use the ISO-9660 format)
  5. Insert the CD-R to DVD player
  6. Press 0 and Enter to enable the multi-region

That's all.

You have to create it locally on your computer. All the steps before burning on the CD should happen on your local machine

Hi how do I set the bytes to the numbers you state here? Thanks

  7. This worked!!! So happy, anyone else who cant get this to work, message me and i’ll help :)

  8. Jason,
first of all : this method works as i just tried it out and i could play a Region 1 DVD on my new player.
I recommend you go to Google and search for ‘hex editor’, you find a couple of freeware programs with which you open the created file and can enter the 8 digit code from above (important : you have to enter it as hexadecimal values, not as text).

  9. Worked! Though computer savvy, I can be a bit of a dolt. So if you are having problems. Here’s the Idiots Guide.
Step 1. Create a file and call it RMTM0000.
Step 2. Open the RMTM0000 file and create another file inside it called SCARLET (keep the upper case letters)
Step 3. Using a Hex editor (I downloaded HxD for free off the net) create a new file.
Step 4. Type in 17 17 8C 00 and save the file under the name KPJC19_1.DVD
Step 5. Move the KPJC19_1.DVD data to the SCARLET file you created earlier
Step 6. Burn the file (RMTM0000—->SCARLET—–>KPJC19_1.DVD) to a CD (I used Neros Data CD setting)
Step 7. Insert the CD into your dvd player
Step 8. Press 0 to enable the multi-region
    DONE
If you’re still stuck send me a message and ill send you the files to burn, skipping steps 1-6

    Thanks!

  27. Hi,
please can you email the file
    mas70uk@gmail.com
    thank you
    Regards Shell

  28. Worked a treat! One thing though – after pressing 0 and ENTER on the remote, the ENTER appeared to do nothing. So I did as it told me on the EEPROM screen and pressed PAUSE. To make it easier for folk, I’ve made an ISO image that you can use with your CD burning package to create the required disc (saves messing around with a hex editor). Note that I didn’t have a CD-RW disc, but I did have a DVD-RW disc and it worked fine. ISO image: http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?file_id=01043252548956289547 (only 1KB!)

Thanks man! Smooth as butter! Same thing here, after pressing 0, I pressed “enter” but the player was not responsive so I pressed “pause” which is assigned as the key for exiting the region code menu. My player is now region free!!
I have to say that initialy I tried to create my own RMTM0000/SCARLET/KPJC19_1.DVD file using the HxD freeware hex editor. It seems to me I did everything right but I kept on getting the message ROM ERR on my TV screen. After a couple of failed attempts, I burned the image that you uploaded in a CD-R using the ImgBurn freeware program, and presto!!
I owe you big time, also MACIEJ MENSFELD who initialy posted this hack!

Hurah! The hack works ok but in my case only after downloading and burning the ISO image Jimadine kindly uploaded!
I would realy like to thank you both, without your contribution a bookcase full of region 1 dvd’s would have gone to waste!

  37. Hi! I know its been a while since you posted this but im getting desperate trying this one way or the other and failing… I uploaded the ISO image into the scarlet file assuming that was what i needed to do. what am i doing wrong?? would appreciate your help cause my christmas present keeps disappointing my kids ;-). Thanks in advance for your time!

  38. I need help, desperately! My christmas present is not bringing the expected joy to my family…. I know it has been a while since you posted this but i´ve been trying since last night and am doing it wrong…my email is danielleruwe@gmail.com
    Thanks!!

  39. Finally understood what to do and it really is that simple!! No need to create directories if you download the image that Jimadine provided. Burn ONLY the iso image/file on the disk (the download gives you two files, I only used the one). Mac uses the right format to burn as standard. Insert the disk and up pops the menu to change region. Awesome. Thanks so much!!!

  40. Worked it out, thanks!

  41. Got it to work, thanks!

  42. Hi Danielle – what computer do you have, mac or PC?

  43. Hi, thanks for getting back to me. I have a mac but i figured it out and it works! I didn’t realize it was only the image i had to burn on the disk..thanks though!

  44. Hi Ecflan

anyway I just noticed that you were also successful in removing the regional restriction. I hope you have a happy new year!

  46. Hi,
If your offer is still open can I please have a copy of the files.
    Thank you John C m1cwo@sky.com

  47. Hi,
Thanks – just got this to work after a couple of false starts!! To burn it I used Nero CD-ROM (ISO) setting. Note that at step 6 you have to press 0 and PAUSE/STEP, not ENTER.

  48. Hi, Can I please have a copy of these files please. email: m1cwo@sky.com
    Cheers John C

  49. Hi, can you please send the files to mctiger318@hotmail.com, Many thanks M
